Introduction

Post by Cathbad » Sat 2 Jan 2021 18:22

There is no introductions thread here, so I thought it fitting to announce my presence with several of me playing a short fanfare. I remember the recording conditions were a little tough: freezing cold church with no power outlet, necessitating use of a crappy Zoom mic. But at least I played most of the right notes in roughly the right order.

So I hereby bid you all hello and happy new year.

Happy new year,

It sounds like a logo (at 0:20) :

That was exactly my intention. I wrote several mini pieces in the style of idents or studio fanfares. They were compositional practice and also material to have a first try at multi track recording with myself.

These kind of ultra short form things are quite enjoyable. Makes a fun change from over-complicated, self-indulgent, plagiaristic production music library rejections finely-crafted, richly orchestrated, respectful 3 minute homages to a Strauss tone poem.

I also like logos in general, the way it creates a mood in a very short time.

It's maybe a bit too fast comparing to the pace of the video and the tone from 0.03 to 0.07 is too light hearted in my opinion but the overall is very nice.

Thanks very much, and it's interesting you should make those criticisms. I wanted it to sound fast, because it's some kind of racing dragster. And I wanted it to have some leggiero, because it's a hover vehicle. So I'm somewhat encouraged that my ideas are coming across.

The funny thing is, I wrote the score out at about quarter = 60. It would have been a lot less black if I'd done it in 3/2 instead of 3/4!

But seriously, this project highlighted how time-consuming orchestral writing is: out of all proportion to 20s of music. In purely business terms, I'm thinking it makes more sense to concentrate on smaller ensembles, perhaps unconventional combinations. What do you think?

Why not but from my experience, generally the composer doesn't really have a say in the decisions affecting the musical formation.

Of course. The director knows much more about music than the guy who's been studying it since he was 5 years old....
